EVENT DESCRIPTION: Please join us for NIL and Collegiate Athletics – The End of the Innocence,* an exciting and timely CLE exploring the legal issues surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL) in collegiate athletics. The program will address the divergent ways schools are dealing with NIL, including collectives and fundraising, the transfer portal, and recruiting. Speakers will look at the potential impact of federal and state legislation, NCAA rule changes, and recent litigation. They will also address the perspectives of schools, collectives, athletes, and other stakeholders, and the challenges for those advising them and their intersecting interests. Whether you’re practicing in or seeking to enter this field of law or passionate about collegiate athletics and how NIL is changing this cornerstone of American culture, you’ll find this presentation rewarding. Part 1 “And you may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’” After 118 years the regulation of “amateur” collegiate sports, where have we arrived, what is next, and who are the winners and losers? Experts from the industry and academy discuss how college sports found itself confronting the present reality of NIL, shifting NCAA regulations, state legislation, anti-trust issues, the portal, and the myriad legal issues currently on the table and just over the horizon.

Part 2 “And isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think?” What NIL actually looks like for collegiate athletes, and does it help or hinder their lives and the future of the sports they play? Current and former collegiate athletes will join a panel program to share their personal experiences with NIL, including current NFL player Britian Covey, who experienced college sports with and without the benefits of NIL.
