This 3-day backpacking course in the Escalante region of Utah introduces students to the essential skills for safe and enjoyable wilderness travel.

The route is known as the Box Route and is considered a classic backpacking loop in the Grand Staircase–Escalante area. It’s often called simply “The Box” and is known for its tall Navajo sandstone canyon walls, year-round flowing water, and relatively accessible but still wild character.

Mileage, Day 1: 1 mile

Mileage, Day 2: 7 miles

Taught by experienced instructors April Ollivier and Jenny Hawke, participants will learn foundational techniques such as packing, navigation, campcraft, and Leave No Trace practices. The curriculum blends classroom-style lessons with hands-on field experiences, giving students the confidence to carry a pack and travel through desert terrain. By the end of the trip, participants will leave with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan and embark on their own backpacking adventures.
